Recognition

Recognition of Prior Learning

What is Recognition?

TAFE NSW recognises the skills and knowledge you have gained through previous studies, work and life experiences. If you have formal qualifications from a TAFE, university, school or a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) in Australia, containing content that is included in the qualification you want to study, you may apply for recognition. If you hold qualifications gained overseas, TAFE NSW will carefully consider them during the recognition process.

If you have been working in an occupation which is relevant to a qualification you are interested in you have probably developed skills and knowledge which may be assessed for recognition. You may also have developed valuable skills by working for a community, a voluntary organisation or through other life experiences such as hobbies and sport and leisure activities, which may also be considered for recognition.

Benefits of recognition - You will benefit from this process because:

  • You might spend less time studying
  • It might cost less to gain qualifications
  • You will not relearn what you already know

What courses do we offer recognition in? Certificate 3, 4 and Diploma of Outdoor Recreation

How much recognition can I gain for a Course?

Based on the skills and knowledge that you have gained you may apply for up to and including 100% of a qualification or course.

How much does recognition cost?

From 1 January 2015 the NSW Government will be introducing changes to how student’s access government subsidised training in NSW as part of the Smart and Skilled reforms of the NSW Vocational Education and Training system. This means that from 1 January 2015 students enrolling in government subsidised courses will have a new fee structure and be required to meet eligibility arrangements to allow them to access government subsidised training places.

This means that students will be required to pay a portion of the new Smart and Skilled course based fee in 2015, if their course is on the NSW Skills List. If the course is not included on the NSW Skills List student’s will be required to pay a commercial fee (nongovernment subsidised) to continue their training in 2015.

Go to www.training.nsw.gov.au/smartandskilled for further information or contact the Course Coordinator to discuss your eligibility or alternative options for payment.
