TVET - Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation

Who is this course for?

If you are a Year 11 or Year 12 Student at school in NSW studying for your High School Certificate or Preliminary HSC you can choose to study a TVET Course in Outdoor Recreation at TAFE NSW Western Institute, Lithgow College.

No prior skills are necessary, but you should have moderate fitness, an interest in the outdoors and adventurous activities, be prepared to sleep in a tent and form lots of new friendships whilst away from home for 9 days.

How to enrol?

Students will need to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) and participant agreement form to us via their Careers Adviser at their School. School Careers Advisers or TVET Coordinators should contact us directly for more information & forms.

What is the course about?

Students enrol in the following Board of Studies Endorsed Courses::

  1. Outdoor Recreation (180) x 3 Units Students that successfully complete the course and submit a first aid certificate to TAFE (completed independently) are eligible to receive a Certificate II in Outdoor recreation.

During the course students learn skills to participate in a number of activities. Activities have been chosen to highlight employment opportunities in the local outdoor recreation industry, as well as being representative of the broader industry employment opportunities. They will also learn key employability skills applicable to any job such as communication, planning & organising, problem solving, self-management and teamwork.

First Program - 9 days Rock Climbing, Canoeing, Canyoning, Abseiling and Camping

For nine days you will be living with up to 20 other students and 2-3 teachers.  In smaller groups one of your tasks will be to cook for the whole group - we will supply the food.

Where is the course run?

Our TVET Outdoor Recreation courses start and finish at Lithgow TAFE, 150km from Sydney on the western edge of the Blue Mountains. During the Program we camp in tents at a number of vehicle accessible campgrounds. During the day we visit a variety of beautiful Australian natural landscapes and environments from: sandstone cliffs in the Blue Mountains for rock climbing and abseiling, national parks for canyoning, and to the local water ways for canoeing.

When is the course run?

Our programs are run many times throughout the year with a number of choices in Terms 1, 2, 3 & 4. This helps you to choose dates that fit with the other parts of your lives; study, sport, work, family. Programs are made up of students from a mix of schools or a school can send a full cohort of 19-21 students to fill a program.
